Hill was memorialised in a tribute poem written about him c. 1930 by Alfred Hayes titled "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night", sometimes referred to simply as "Joe Hill". Hayes's lyrics were turned into a song in 1936 by Earl Robinson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Hill Paul Robeson sang this song while in Edinburgh to perform a miners' benefit concert in the Usher Hall for 3000 miners and their families sponsored by the Scottish National Union of Mineworkers as featured...

This is my take on the radio programme that was the rage of the age in the 1940s and 50s. I would rush home from school to listen to it and often had rows with my old man who preferred the racing results. The BBC brought it out on television recently with some success but the radio version couldn't be bettered. You had to use your imagination - even the BBC announcer was wearing a dinner jacket and bow-tie! - Mick Broderick Part of the Raretunes Archive- see...

The singer writes: "I remember seeing Joan Baez sing this at Club 47 in Cambridge MA in 1960. Samuel Pepys in his Diary under the date of January 2nd 1665, speaks of the singing of Barbara Allen. The English and Scottish both claim the original ballad in different versions, and both versions were brought over to the US by the earliest settlers. Since then there have been countless variations (some 98 are found in Virginia alone). The version used here is the English one. The tune is...

A song associated with the construction of the hydro-electric dam at Shira Glen. From the Electric Scotland website: The writer of this song Helen Fullerton ran the little mobile shop serving the construction workers on the Glen Shira hydro-electricity scheme. She knew at first hand the hard work and danger facing the construction men, many of them Irish, who helped bring electric light, for the first time, to many parts of Scotland. There's a place that's over-grown at the foot o' Shira Glen,...
